The Makeup Artists Guide To Foundations

Many colour cosmetics are interchangeable between different skin tones, but when it comes to foundation there is less room for adaptability and your make-up kit needs to cater for all ethnicities. Luckily, many luxury beauty brands have expanded their core collection to carry a wide range of base colours. We’ve done the leg work to make it easy for you to know which brands to target in the department store:

Best for: Yellow undertones

Bobbi Brown

As one of the first brands to acknowledge that not everyone has a ‘medium’ skin tone, Bobbi is a safe bet for stocking up on complexion perfectors. Its selection for dark tones skin is excellent, but it’s real strong point is its lightest shades, which are pale without being too pink – Albaster is ideal for redheads. Indeed you’ll find many of Bobbi’s shades are yellow based; while this is great for achieving a fresh and healthy look, it can prove trickier for darker skins with red undertones so make sure you buy across different brands.

Best for: Asian skin

Giorgio Armani

Famed for its foundations, Armani products have a beautiful texture to work with and its SPF-free formulations are ideal for wedding make-up. The shade range offered is succinct, but sufficient and works particular well for Asian skin tones that can sometimes be saddled with flat, ashy shades. Stock-up on shades 3, 4 and 4.5 and blend to create a custom colour match for your client.

Best for: Dark skin tones

It may seem like an obvious choice, but there is a reason why MAC is so popular with make-up artists. Not only does its base colour spectrum remain one of the most generous in the Beauty Hall, but it stays shade true across all formulations. We recommend stocking up on a few bottles of Face and Body to ensure that the model’s back/arms/legs look as flawless as the complexion (yes that’s your job too!). Another product to look out for is Matchmaster in shade 9, a deep velvety that will look beautiful on dark skin with red undertones.

And for application? The Foundation Brush and The Buff Brush both offer superb application, ensuring a creaseless beautiful base.
